Species

Deer species have always been emblematic symbols in different cultures, serving as a source of food, leather, skin, or for medical purposes. In particular, Neotropical deer originated approximately three million years ago, by the end of the Pliocene and the formation of the isthmus of Panama. They belong to the family Cervidae, Order Artyodactyla, and constitute two morphological groups
-
Small species, less than 60 cm high at the withers (<30 kg), males with unbranched antlers and adapted to forests and other habitats of closed vegetation; conformed by the genera Mazama, Subulo and Pudu.
-
Species in which the males have branched antlers and have a medium to large structure (>30 kg). These species inhabit environments with more open vegetation; conformed by the genera Odocoileus, Hippocamelus, Ozotoceros, and Blastocerus.
