Ecology

Studies conducted in Ecology aims to elucidate questions about the natural history of deer. Our research focus is to better understand the interaction among sympatric species, the spatial use of the landscape, geographical distributions and densities, and also the detection of new populations in some degree of risk.

To investigate all those issues, we perform our studies using traditional methods such as camera traps and GPS collars. However, it was essential to develop a method for the detection of elusive species, such as the use of scat detection dogs to identify fecal samples which can provide valuable information about species (animal movements, home range, habitat) and its DNA information.

Our research projects involve different biomes, such as the Pantanal, the Cerrado, the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon, as well as in anthropized landscapes.

In general, our work addresses the following subjects:

- Habitat use

- Movement and activity

- Geographical distribution

- Ecological niche

- Interspecific interactions

- Density

- Anthropic influences

- Non-invasive sampling

- Species detection and identification tools

- Threat level categorization
